In contrast to peripheral blood NK cells, decidual NK (dNK) cells lack cytotoxicity, secrete proangiogenic factors, and regulate trophoblast invasion. In this study we show that exposure to a combination of hypoxia, TGF-\u03b21, and a demethylating agent results in NK cells that express killer cell Ig-like receptors, the dNK cell markers CD9 and CD49a, and a dNK pattern of chemokine receptors. These cells secrete vascular endothelial growth factor (a potent proangiogenic molecule), display reduced cytotoxicity, and promote invasion of human trophoblast cell lines. These findings have potential therapeutic applications for placental disorders associated with altered NK cell biology.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.4049\/jimmunol.1202582","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2013,3,14]],"date-time":"2013-03-14T05:23:32Z","timestamp":1363238612000},"page":"3939-3948","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":172,"title":["Conversion of Peripheral Blood NK Cells to a Decidual NK-like Phenotype by a Cocktail of Defined Factors"],"prefix":"10.1093","volume":"190","author":[{"given":"Ana Sofia","family":"Cerdeira","sequence":"first","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School , Boston, MA 02215"},{"name":"Gulbenkian Program for Advanced Medical Education , 1067-001 Lisbon,","place":["Portugal"]},{"name":"Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Centro Hospitalar do Porto, Porto University , 4099-001 Porto,","place":["Portugal"]}]},{"given":"Augustine","family":"Rajakumar","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School , Boston, MA 02215"},{"name":"Howard Hughes Medical Institute , Chevy Chase, MD 20815"}]},{"given":"Caroline M","family":"Royle","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School , Boston, MA 02215"}]},{"given":"Agnes","family":"Lo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School , Boston, MA 02215"}]},{"given":"Zaheed","family":"Husain","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School , Boston, MA 02215"}]},{"given":"Ravi I","family":"Thadhani","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Division of Nephrology, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School , Boston, MA 02114"}]},{"given":"Vikas P","family":"Sukhatme","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School , Boston, MA 02215"}]},{"given":"S Ananth","family":"Karumanchi","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School , Boston, MA 02215"},{"name":"Howard Hughes Medical Institute , Chevy Chase, MD 20815"}]},{"given":"Hernan D","family":"Kopcow","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[{"name":"Department of Medicine, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School , Boston, MA 02215"},{"name":"Harvard Stem Cell Institute , Cambridge, MA 02138"}]}],"member":"286","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2013,4,15]]},"reference":[{"key":"2025032406524053700_r1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"461","DOI":"10.1182\/blood-2007-09-077438","article-title":"Human natural killer cells","volume":"112","author":"Caligiuri","year":"2008","journal-title":"Blood"},{"key":"2025032406524053700_r2","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"1006","DOI":"10.1038\/ni1102-1006","article-title":"Viral evasion of natural killer cells","volume":"3","author":"Orange","year":"2002","journal-title":"Nat.
