{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2026,2,28]],"date-time":"2026-02-28T05:19:01Z","timestamp":1772255941416,"version":"3.50.1"},"reference-count":0,"publisher":"Instituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia, INGV","issue":"6","content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":[],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[2014,2,21]]},"abstract":"<jats:p>Southwest mainland Portugal is located close to the Eurasia-Nubia\u00a0plate boundary and is characterized by moderate seismicity, although\u00a0strong events have occurred as in 1755 (Mw\u22658), 1969, (Mw 7.9), and\u00a0more recently in 2007 (Mw 5.9) and 2009 (Mw 5.5), all located in the offshore.\u00a0No historical earthquakes with onshore rupture are known for\u00a0this region. At the coastline, high sea cliffs, incised drainages, emergent\u00a0marine abrasion platforms and paleo sea cliffs indicate that this region\u00a0is undergoing uplift, although no morphological features were found\u00a0that could be unequivocally associated with the 1755 mega earthquake.\u00a0To better understand the recent tectonic activity in this sector of Iberia,\u00a0it is necessary not only to analyze active structures on land, but also to\u00a0search for evidence for deformation that may relate to inferred offshore\u00a0active structures. We thus conducted a study of marine terraces along\u00a0the coastline to identify regional vertical crustal motions. Several poorly\u00a0preserved surfaces with thin sedimentary deposits, comprising old beach\u00a0sediments, were recognized at elevations starting at 2 m elevation and\u00a0rising inland up to a regional abrasion platform situated at about 120\u00a0m a.s.l.. We identified distinct paleo sea level references at several locations\u00a0at consistent elevations. This terrace sequence is likely Late Pleistocene\u00a0in age, with individual platforms correlative to MIS 5 high stands\u00a0and is coherent with a long-term slow uplift of the littoral zone for the\u00a0southwest of Portugal.
