I will begin by defining the concepts of political\nsong and protest song (can\u00e7\u00e3o de interven\u00e7\u00e3o), arguing that popular\nmusic, even when not overtly political, can still be considered political.\nI will then provide a brief overview of the use of troubadour lyric\npoetry in modern musical reinterpretations prior to the emergence\nof the baladeiro movement and the renewal of popular song that\nbegan in the 1950s.
