Com a Revolu\u00e7\u00e3o Russa de 1917, e, mais tarde, os regimes fascistas que se espalham pela Europa, a altern\u00e2ncia entre a experimenta\u00e7\u00e3o est\u00e9tica arrojada e o arregimentar da arte \u00e0 propaganda tornam-se realidades que, de um ou outro modo, imp\u00f5em aos artistas alguma forma de posicionamento. Neste processo, \u00e9 frequente as representa\u00e7\u00f5es do passado servirem para possibilitar um certo discurso acerca do presente, sobretudo quando as representa\u00e7\u00f5es directas deste se tornam \u00abpoliticamente problem\u00e1ticas\u00bb (i.e. perigosas). Tal \u00e9 o que sucede com o pr\u00f3prio conceito de Idade M\u00e9dia, desde a sua origem. Este artigo pretende justamente explorar o modo como as representa\u00e7\u00f5es cinematogr\u00e1ficas da Idade M\u00e9dia servem diferentemente de ve\u00edculo \u00e0 de express\u00e3o de concep\u00e7\u00f5es est\u00e9ticas, art\u00edsticas e pol\u00edticas em dois filmes produzidos em pa\u00edses do ex-bloco socialista, onde as tens\u00f5es e altern\u00e2ncias de que falamos se tornam, mais do que uma quest\u00e3o meramente te\u00f3rica, uma quest\u00e3o de sobreviv\u00eancia: Alexander Nevsky de Serguei Eisenstein (1938) e M\u00e1rketa Lazarov\u00e1\u2002de Franti\u0161ek Vl\u00e1\u010dil (1967).\nABSTRACT:\nIn the 20th century, phenomena like that of mass art \u2013 particularly cinema \u2013 emerge in tandem with new forms of relationship between political power, ideology, art and aesthetics. With the Russian Revolution of 1917, and, later, with the spread of fascist regimes across Europe, alternating between bold aesthetic experimentation and the use of art as propaganda become factors that compel artists, in one way or another, to take some sort of stand. In this process, representations of the past are often employed so as to make it possible to speak about the present, especially when direct portrayal of the latter becomes \u2018politically problematic\u2019 (i.e. dangerous). Such is also the case with the concept of \u2018middle ages\u2019 itself, from its inception.
