The benefits of this method consist in better performance with respect to other available methods, especially in case of shadows around the sediment particle and in a more systematic and faster procedure with respect to manual segmentation. The method is compared with the one proposed by Roussillon et. al. 2009 and its performances are assessed using shapes having known morphometry descriptors. We moreover propose a way to assess the relative error one can expect in the estimates of particles travel distances using sediment morphometry as their proxy. The conclusions derived hold under the hypothesis of validity of a relationship between particles&amp;amp;#8217; relative mass loss and circularity and on the empirical Sternberg&amp;amp;#8217;s law.
