Sediment have a complex and dynamic role in a variety of ecosystem functions and services, and are an indicator of sources of pollution in the upstream drained areas. The need of the inclusion of sediment sampling in monitoring plans, according to the Water Framework Directive (WFD), was already been recognised, but more knowledge is necessary to define the most adequate methodologies not only related to sediment sampling and chemical analysis, but as well to the expression of the results and classification of sediment in terms of contamination levels.\nRegarding the evaluation of sediment pollution by metal(oid)s, it is common to calculate contamination indices to quantify the metal enrichment in sediment. The assumptions on the basis of the calculation of different indices are similar: to compare the content of metal under consideration with a background, or reference, value for the same element (e.g. Igeo and CF), which can be normalized (e.g. EF) to a reference element considered conservative (e.g. Al, Fe, Li, Sc, Ti, and Zr), which concentration in the sample medium will practically exclusively be influenced by lithological sources. To distinguish between the human and natural contributions to metal contents in sediments is a challenge, because of the influence of natural local variability of metals on sediment composition, as well as the fluvial processes involved in its dynamics. In order to overcome a possible overestimation of metal concentration in unpolluted sediment, it is fundamental to select a proper reference metal concentration. The common use, as reference value, the mean elemental contents of upper continental crust (UCC) is valid for larger river basins, where several types of rocks outcrop, but in small-sized catchments hardly reflect the local average bedrock chemical composition.\nThis study considered two small sized catchments, subjected to different environmental pressures, and investigated the contents, pattern of the spatial and temporal distribution, and enrichment metals in fluvial sediments (potential environmental risk associated), by applying contamination indices frequently used in environmental studies. The results were interpreted in terms of the reference values used in the classification of the quality of the sediment.\nAcknowledgments: FCT – Foundation for Science and Technology, Portugal, through the Project UIDB\/00073\/2020 and UIDP\/00073\/2020, I&D D unit Geosciences Center (CGEO).<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.5194\/egusphere-egu24-20235","type":"posted-content","created":{"date-parts":[[2024,3,11]],"date-time":"2024-03-11T12:43:31Z","timestamp":1710161011000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Expressing the quality of sediment in the context of river monitoring plans"],"prefix":"10.5194","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-9928-7958","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Anabela","family":"Reis","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Marta","family":"Roboredo","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"3145","container-title":[],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2024,3,11]],"date-time":"2024-03-11T13:02:27Z","timestamp":1710162147000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/meetingorganizer.copernicus.org\/EGU24\/EGU24-20235.html"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2024,3,11]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5194\/egusphere-egu24-20235","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2024,3,11]]},"subtype":"other"}}
