In the Maritime Antarctic, the later are dominated by the buffering effect snow cover, which has been identified by several studies as key in understanding interannual active layer temperature and thickness variability. During the warm season, from December to March, with lacking snow cover, the soil and the atmosphere show a better coupling with an increased effect of the later in the thermal regime. Here, we study the impact of synoptic-scale weather conditions on the active layer temperature regime during the warm season by analysing mean monthly, daily and hourly active layer temperatures from 2008 to 2024 from a very shallow borehole (2, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, 80 and 120 cm depth), and weather conditions using air temperature observations and ERA-5 data. The study focus at the Irizar CALM-S site, located in Deception Island in the South Shetlands archipelago (Antarctic Peninsula). The site is at an elevation of 130 m in a wide col in the main crater rim, which bridges the ocean-side and the inner caldera slopes, making it very wind-exposed. The data shows a cooling of the active layer from 2008 to 2015, followed by a strong warming . The permafrost table is located between 80 and 120 cm. This research is a contribution to the project THAWIMPACT - Antarctic Peninsula permafrost under a changing climate: sensitivity, fate and impacts, funded by the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (2022.06628.PTDC).<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.5194\/egusphere-egu25-16911","type":"posted-content","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,3,15]],"date-time":"2025-03-15T04:22:26Z","timestamp":1742012546000},"source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Weather types and their impacts on the warm season active layer temperatures at the Irizar CALM-S site (Deception Island, Antarctica)"],"prefix":"10.5194","author":[{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0002-0843-3658","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Carla","family":"Mora","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"ORCID":"https:\/\/orcid.org\/0000-0001-7611-3464","authenticated-orcid":false,"given":"Gon\u00e7alo","family":"Veira","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"3145","container-title":[],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,3,15]],"date-time":"2025-03-15T04:41:22Z","timestamp":1742013682000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/meetingorganizer.copernicus.org\/EGU25\/EGU25-16911.html"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2025,3,15]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.5194\/egusphere-egu25-16911","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2025,3,15]]},"subtype":"other"}}
