Ave’s valley is a region located NW to Oporto city that withstood a considerable expansion of its urbanisation over the last decades of the 20th century. As in so many other contemporary urban areas developed in-between the traditional cities, the outcome of that growth is an almost chaotic (dis)organisation, visually marked by the difficult intelligibility of the buildings and activities’ settlement logic. Due to this paradigmatic situation Ave’s valley is set as the case study, supporting a reflexion about the areas that can be thus described, the ways to introduce clarity in territorial (dis)organization using a morphologic dimension and about the elements which, pertaining to that dimension and considered in multiple scales, set themselves up as elements of order and structure, in its multiple conceptual layers. Nevertheless Ave, as any other paradigm-area, is only so up to a certain degree, reconciling common features of the paradigm with individual ones that distinguish it and show a particular variant of the general discourse.
Assuming this territory as a palimpsest, Ave’s (multiple) logic is primarily identified, by understanding it through seeking the (subjacent and hidden) sense of what is seen and, and, at a first glance, seems not to exist. From that research emerges the «territorialisation» of dynamics transversal to several other places. Resulting from an ancient dispersion of urbanisation, prior to industrialisation, but sustaining a renewed and individual statement in the intrinsic relation between agriculture/industry and culture, Ave finds much of the process’s basic and explaining sense in that past; however, its image is essentially justified in an element of antropic nature – the road network. Questioning it as one of the three basic elements of landscape construction, side-by-side with the water and topography, the strength of the «pathway» nevertheless overcomes them as both explaining element of the landscape (dis)order and characteristic of its specificity.
Dense, with little hierarchy, narrow and winding, primarily made out of pathways to which some roads join, the dominant configuration of the road network is highly dependent on agricultural parcels, irregular in shape and small in size: first, the «pathway» is the «line» that confines and crosses them; afterwards, with the use given by the industrial context of the 19th century extended till the middle of the 20th century, it converts into «public space»; recently its essential meaning was restricted to «access». The support of building and activities, the road network mirrors the various territorial dynamics and was, thus, selected as the main binding thread of this research; its structuring ability was evaluated by the fulfilment of three functions: connection/irrigation, urbanisation and shaping, and also the materialization of its use as a “design tool”.
Through an understanding of the urbanisation models – expression of an identity deeply rooted in space – and, specifically, of the road network as agent of that spatial realisation, the framework that allows inquiring it as ordering instrument of the macro and micro landscape is built. The Road Network of an Intermediate Level (RNIL) is part of that exercise, a response to a medium/macro level of hierarchy which is absent in Ave and is a defining feature of the Urban System, whose sense depends on the articulation with other morphological territorial elements. A «weave-road» constitutes a conceptual proposal to a small part of the RNIL, where that role is applied on several territorial scales and meanings. In the end, it’s the approaching principles that remain as an experiment that could be transferred to other urban realities that, as Ave, need specific intervention rationale and tools, though still to be validated in each particular territorial situation.
[[2023,10,3
[[2011,1,17
[[2026,2,8
[[null
