This includes real-time and data-driven processes, employees who recognize the value of well-structured workflows, standardized company-wide process management practices, and a strong process management culture.\n\nHowever, the authors have observed that process management training - particularly in university courses - often focuses solely on modeling and automating isolated processes. As a result, graduates may enter the labor market with insufficient practical knowledge. To bridge this gap between academic instruction and real-world application, the authors developed a modeling and simulation environment designed to enhance students' process management skills. This environment incorporates real-world case studies, extensive screencasts, and collaborative exercises. Despite these resources, students have not yet gained the tool for independent learning. This paper introduces a systematic approach to improve the learning experience.\n\nTwo frameworks are introduced: the Process Management Compass defines the key dimensions of process management and the Process Management Competence Ladder categorizes skill levels from beginner to expert. These frameworks then serve to build a novel e-learning environment designed to fully develop process management competencies.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.7148\/2025-0486","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,7,23]],"date-time":"2025-07-23T16:59:10Z","timestamp":1753289950000},"page":"486-492","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Process Management Compass And Competence Ladder To Empower Process Management Skills"],"prefix":"10.7148","author":[{"given":"Carlo","family":"Simon","sequence":"first","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Merlin","family":"Hladik","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]},{"given":"Stefan","family":"Haag","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[]}],"member":"4144","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,6,24]]},"event":{"name":"39th ECMS International Conference on Modelling and Simulation"},"container-title":["ECMS 2025 Proceedings edited by Marco Scarpa, Salvatore Cavalieri, Salvatore Serrano, Fabrizio De Vita"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2025,7,23]],"date-time":"2025-07-23T16:59:11Z","timestamp":1753289951000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/www.scs-europe.net\/dlib\/2025\/2025-0486.html"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2025,6,24]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.7148\/2025-0486","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2025,6,24]]}}}
