If this is a common issue, a deeper understanding could help bridge the invisible gap between research and practice.\n\nThis paper starts with an analysis of 1916 former (process) simulation publications in major conferences and journals, especially ECMS, from 2010 to 2025 in order to understand which value propositions helped to initiate cooperation between research and practice and to overcome the first and decisive step.\n\nThen life-cycle models for (process) simulation projects are considered to better align different stakeholders\u2019 expectations. The goal is to improve the prospects of success to initiate such projects and to understand when the above identified value propositionshave to be communicated to the partners.\n\nThis is the first of three papers to elaborate a research agenda on how to improve process simulation life-cycles. It summarizes the results of the first phase, presents the current state of the intended agenda, and gives an outlook onto the next two steps which will deal with the use of artificial intelligence for further improvements.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.7148\/2026-0519","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,6,30]],"date-time":"2026-06-30T16:55:14Z","timestamp":1782838514000},"page":"519-525","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["A research agenda to improve process simulation life-cycles in academia and practice"],"prefix":"10.7148","author":[{"given":"Carlo","family":"Simon","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Merlin","family":"Hladik","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"4144","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2026,6,23]]},"event":{"name":"40th ECMS International Conference on Modelling and Simulation"},"container-title":["ECMS 2026 Proceedings edited by Filippo Sanfilippo, Florenc Demrozi, Fabio Sgarbossa, Mohammad Poursina"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,6,30]],"date-time":"2026-06-30T16:55:19Z","timestamp":1782838519000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"http:\/\/www.scs-europe.net\/dlib\/2026\/ecms2026acceptedpapers\/0519_simo_ecms2026_0031.pdf"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2026,6,23]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.7148\/2026-0519","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2026,6,23]]}}}
