They typically provide an acceptable solution even in highly complex circumstances. This fact is an important positive feature, particularly when no feasible solution is available. On the other hand, this robustness and the fact that living nature utilizes analogous mechanisms for its development and propagation sometimes lead to unrealistic expectations and exaggerated faith in their capabilities.\n\nIn this article, we focus primarily on the crossover operation of the genetic algorithm. The crossover mechanism constitutes the principal and characteristic part of the genetic algorithms. It takes a pair of genotypes and creates a new, potentially better pair of genotypes. The constructed genotypes are typically essentially different from the source genotypes. It is generally accepted that the probability that the crossover operation leaves the source genotypes unchanged is very low. But there are hardly any published sources that give quantitative estimates regarding such probabilities. We provide in this paper two different quantitative models that give the probability of the survival of the genotypes during the crossover operation.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.7148\/2026-0554","type":"proceedings-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2026,6,30]],"date-time":"2026-06-30T16:55:14Z","timestamp":1782838514000},"page":"554-560","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Quantitative analysis of the crossover operation in genetic algorithms"],"prefix":"10.7148","author":[{"given":"Roman","family":"Knobloch","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]},{"given":"Jaroslav","family":"Mlynek","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"vocabulary":"crossref","role":"author"}]}],"member":"4144","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2026,6,23]]},"event":{"name":"40th ECMS International Conference on Modelling and Simulation"},"container-title":["ECMS 2026 Proceedings edited by Filippo Sanfilippo, Florenc Demrozi, Fabio Sgarbossa, Mohammad Poursina"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,6,30]],"date-time":"2026-06-30T16:55:20Z","timestamp":1782838520000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"http:\/\/www.scs-europe.net\/dlib\/2026\/ecms2026acceptedpapers\/0554_simo_ecms2026_0073.pdf"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2026,6,23]]},"references-count":0,"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.7148\/2026-0554","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2026,6,23]]}}}
