Ce concept, qu\u2019il d\u00e9laissa lui-m\u00eame au profit d\u2019autres pistes de recherche, connut n\u00e9anmoins une fortune consid\u00e9rable dans les sciences sociales. Bien plus pourtant qu\u2019une v\u00e9ritable politique de la vie, que l\u2019\u00e9tymologie du mot paraissait annoncer, la biopolitique s\u2019est r\u00e9v\u00e9l\u00e9e \u00eatre un gouvernement des populations, des conduites et des pratiques, laissant \u00e9chapper ce qu\u2019on peut appeler la vie elle-m\u00eame. Reprenant une double ligne de r\u00e9flexion \u00e0 partir de Georges Canguilhem, dont il fut l\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve, et d\u2019Hannah Arendt, dont il ignora l\u2019oeuvre, on se propose dans ce texte de retourner \u00e0 la substance des politiques de la vie, entre vivant et v\u00e9cu, entre<jats:italic>zo\u00e9<\/jats:italic>et<jats:italic>bios<\/jats:italic>, et, \u00e0 partir de travaux empiriques conduits sur les r\u00e9fugi\u00e9s en France et sur le sida en Afrique du Sud, d\u2019appr\u00e9hender certains des enjeux de ces politiques.
