{"status":"ok","message-type":"work","message-version":"1.0.0","message":{"indexed":{"date-parts":[[2024,7,17]],"date-time":"2024-07-17T00:24:52Z","timestamp":1721175892851},"reference-count":0,"publisher":"Instituto Universitario de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL)","issue":"105","content-domain":{"domain":[],"crossmark-restriction":false},"short-container-title":["SPP"],"abstract":"<jats:p>Brazil and Italy, Jair Bolsonaro and Matteo Salvini, two populist leaders who, in Latin America and Europe, and alongside Donald Trump in the US, experienced a strong affirmation in 2018 \u2013 Italy and Brazil \u2014 and 2016 US, respectively. This paper aims to analyse whether and to what extent Bolsonaro and Salvini have effectively created the People through the equivalential chain. That is, according to Laclau, the specificity of populism lies in the ability of a leader to transform a shapeless social group into a unique People. The leader\u2019s speech establishes the borders, and it is through identification with the leader\u2019s speech that the People\u2019s collective identity is formed. Using three dimensions \u2013 the leader, the ideology and the audience \u2013 we analyse the similarities and differences between the two experiences.
