This research explores the relationship \nbetween federal and state fiscal relations under democratic governance in Nigeria.  This \npaper aims to examine the fiscal relations between the Federal and state governments \nunder democratic governance. The methodology adopted for this research is a literature \nsearch based on qualitative data. These data were obtained from policy documents, \njournals, newspapers, textbooks, etc. The data was subsequently analyzed using content \nanalysis. The findings revealed that despite the various constitutional provisions, the \nprinciple of fiscal relations is faced with the challenges of unequal distribution of \nnational resources between the federal and its federating units, inadequate revenue \ngeneration, and fiscal functions of the various tiers of government. The paper \nconcluded that fiscal relations are highly lopsided as they favour the federal \ngovernment against the federating units and have less impact on the people. The paper \nrecommended that there is a need to ensure that there should be an equitable \ndistribution of revenue and fiscal responsibilities among the federating units, and each \nstate government should be encouraged to improve its internal revenue generation.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.69798\/83358176","type":"journal-article","created":{"date-parts":[[2025,8,10]],"date-time":"2025-08-10T12:26:27Z","timestamp":1754828787000},"page":"22-34","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":0,"title":["Federal-State Fiscal Relations Under a Democratic Governance: critical analysis of Nigeria\u2019s experience"],"prefix":"10.69798","volume":"1","author":[{"name":"University of Abuja, Nigeria","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Sanni","family":"Yusuf","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"given":"Sylvester","family":"Usman","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]},{"name":"Kaduna State University, Kaduna, Nigeria","sequence":"additional","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"50185","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,7,1]]},"container-title":["Journal of Ecopolitics, Peace, and Sustainable Development"],"original-title":[],"deposited":{"date-parts":[[2026,1,11]],"date-time":"2026-01-11T13:04:42Z","timestamp":1768136682000},"score":1,"resource":{"primary":{"URL":"https:\/\/koozakar.com\/journals\/article\/KJ-52136081"}},"subtitle":[],"short-title":[],"issued":{"date-parts":[[2025,7,1]]},"references-count":0,"journal-issue":{"issue":"1","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2025,7,1]]}},"URL":"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.69798\/83358176","relation":{},"subject":[],"published":{"date-parts":[[2025,7,1]]}}}
