Sys."],"published-print":{"date-parts":[[1991,12]]},"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>We show that the only hyperbolic toral automorphisms <jats:italic>f<\/jats:italic> for which there exist Markov partitions with piecewise smooth boundary are those for which a power <jats:italic>f<\/jats:italic><jats:sup>k<\/jats:sup> is linearly covered by a direct product of automorphisms of the 2-torus. Only a finite number of shapes occur in a certain natural set of cross-sections of the partition boundary. The behavior of the stratified structure of a piecewise smooth boundary under the mapping forces these shapes to be self-similar. This, together with expanding properties of the mapping, means that a piecewise smooth partition is in fact piecewise linear. These works are seminal landmarks of the grunt's-eye-view genre, but they produce the average soldier's subjectivity and identity very differently and, in turn, foster different relationships between their American audiences and this figure. Herr, I argue, represents the \u201cgrunts\u201d of Vietnam as <jats:italic>we all<\/jats:italic> while <jats:italic>Restrepo<\/jats:italic>\u2019s directors portray the Army platoon in Afghanistan as a collective <jats:italic>who?<\/jats:italic>. In the present paper I determine the role of a new gauge invariance (\u2019\u2019dynamical\u2019\u2019 gauge invariance), satisfied by the equations of motion of systems covered by the formalism, and the relationship this bears to the Helmholtz conditions. A certain subgroup, of \u2019\u2019kinematic\u2019\u2019 gauge transformations, is singled out: the kinematic gauge transformations correspond for the Lorentz force law to the usual gauge transformation of electromagnetism, general dynamical gauge transformations correspond to minimal substitutions. An analogue for the nonalbelian gauge force law is discussed briefly.
