Feynman introduced the field of microscale and nanoscale engineering in 1959 by giving a talk on how to make things very small. Feynman\u2019s premise was that no fundamental physical laws limit the size of a machine down to the microscopic level. Is this true for all types of machines? Are micro thermal devices fundamentally different than mechanically-based machines with respect to their scaling laws? This paper demonstrates that micro thermal engines do indeed suffer serious performance degradation as their characteristic size is reduced. A micro thermal engine, and more generally, any thermally-based micro device, depends on establishing a temperature difference between two regions within a small structure. In this paper, the performance of a micro thermal engine is explored as a function of the characteristic length parameter, L. In the development, the important features of thermal engines are discussed in the context of developing simple scaling laws predicting the dependency of the operating efficiency on L. After this is accomplished, a general model is derived for a heat engine operating between two temperature reservoirs and having both intrinsic and extrinsic sources of irreversibility, i.e. thermal conductances and heat leakage paths for the heat flow. With this model and typical numerical values for the conductances, micro heat engine performance is predicted as the characteristic size is reduced. This paper demonstrates that under at least one particular formulation of the problem, there may indeed be some room at the bottom. However, heat transfer does play a critical role in determining micro engine performance and depending on how the heat transfer through the engine is modeled, vanishingly small efficiencies can result as the characteristic engine size goes to These lowest degree terms  correspond to minimal border strip tableaux of $\\lambda$.  The dimension of the space spanned by $\\hat{s}_\\lambda$, where $\\lambda$ is a partition of $n$, is equal to the number of partitions of $n$ into parts differing by at least 2. Applying     the Rogers-Ramanujan identity, the generating function also counts the number of partitions of $n$ into parts $5k+1$ and $5k-1$. Room criteria are contentious because, for years, the acoustical community has been trying, with minimal success, to come to some consensus on the types of descriptors, measurement procedures, and rating schemes based on steady state noises in rooms. (What constitutes steady state is not agreed upon.) Evidence of this long standing problem is the new ANSI standard S12.2-1995: Even though written after perhaps 10 years effort, it is still not satisfactory to many, if not most, people. This presentation tries to provide a perspective on this issue, not from an expert\u2019s point of view, but from someone immersed in the controversy for a long time. The issues that need to be addressed, the current and proposed methods, and the problem with data collection, funding, and research will be discussed. The contrast between these two periods introduces a new theme. The first part of this chapter will study stone towers and related structures in the West Mediterranean. In every case they were associated with settlement sites and some may have been domestic buildings in their own right. Over time, they came to favour a circular plan. This section considers monuments in Sardinia, Corsica, and the Balearics and compares them with sites in Spain. It also asks whether they represent a single phenomenon. The second part considers three groups of timber buildings in Britain and Ireland and the enclosures with which they are associated. In this case they date from different periods. Although they resemble one another on the ground, there were few direct connections between them and, in at least two instances, they are thought to have been ceremonial centres. These sites in the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic are considered together in the light of a recent analysis of monumental architecture in the eastern USA. Both sections are designed to complement one another. The first considers the development of Great Houses in a series of well-populated landscapes. The second works at a larger geographical scale and studies the ways in which such buildings, and the earthworks associated with them, were related to a still more extensive area, until the most elaborate of all could be considered as microcosms of the wider world. Chapter Four discussed the domus de janas of Sardinia, the surprisingly realistic copies of domestic interiors provided for the dead during the Ozieri Culture. They were lavishly decorated and have produced radiocarbon dates which suggest that they were contemporary with the later phases of megalithic art in Western Europe. At the same time, most of the Sardinian structures were roughly square or rectangular and only a minority were designed as depictions of roundhouses.
