While existing scholarship has largely examined partition either through the lens of high politics or through social and cultural histories of civilian experience, this article shifts the focus to the perspectives of British officers who remained in South Asia during the transition. Drawing on underutilized sources, it explores how these officers interpreted and experienced the upheavals of 1947, arguing that the reconstitution of the Indian Army along communal lines was itself a process of border-making, which mirrored, and at times anticipated, the territorial partition of the subcontinent. Through the accounts of these officers, the article shows that British officers widely criticized the speed and execution of partition, characterizing it as a rushed and disorderly process that exacerbated the violence unfolding around them. At the same time, they reveal the profound sense of grief felt by British officers at the dismantling of the army they had served in for decades along communal lines. Finally, the article provides further insight into the extent to which communal tensions penetrated an institution long regarded as a cohesive and disciplined fighting force. In doing so, it positions the division of the Indian Army as a central rather than peripheral dimension of partition.
[[2026,7,21
["Between New Borders
Letter to Richard O’Connor [Letter]. Balochistan is the region where, during the years of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan and, subsequently, Operation Enduring Freedom and beyond, to the present day, fighting groups acting both across the border in Afghanistan and on Pakistani soil were trained and armed. Always a frontier land, Balochistan was the subject of British plans to divide the Indian subcontinent: British military and air bases were concentrated here. With the independence of India and Pakistan, it was of vital importance to Britain and the United States to maintain military control of Balochistan and did so by amalgamating the region with a weak and easily manipulated state like Pakistan. The article reconstructs the events that led to India's partition, detailing the view that British military circles had of Balochistan, offering a totally novel perspective, given that, when discussing the partition of South Asia, we mostly focus on other areas, such as Kashmir, neglecting areas that were equally important but have so far escaped scholarly attention. The current instability in Balochistan, where the interests of several players, the US, Pakistan, China, and India, now intersect, is a consequence of the geopolitical arrangements encouraged in 1947 by Britain.
[[2025,6,20
["MAKING AND UNMAKING BORDERS IN SOUTH ASIA: THE PARTITION OF INDIA AND THE BALOCHISTAN UNREST
[[2025,6,20
Il Politico
[[2025,12,4
[[2025,6,20
[[2025,6,20
https://doi.org/10.4081/ilpolitico.2025.1051
0032-325X
[[2025,6,20
2026,5,2
[[1999,3,1
["Indian Journal of Gender Studies
1999,3
[[2007,3,11
["Book Reviews : Ritu Menon and Kamla Bhasin, Borders and Boundaries: Women in India's Partition.
