Instead of a holistic approach (family\u2010level phylogeny), this study uses a bottom\u2010up strategy (tribal grouping) in order to define larger, monophyletic lineages within Tenebrioninae. Sampling included representatives of 27 tenebrionid tribes: Alleculini, Amarygmini, Amphidorini, Blaptini, Bolitophagini, Branchini, Cerenopini, Coniontini, Caenocrypticini, Dendarini, Eulabini, Helopini, Lagriini, Melanimini, Opatrini, Pedinini, Phaleriini, Physogasterini, Platynotini, Platyscelidini, Praociini, Scaurini, Scotobiini, Tenebrionini, Trachyscelini, Triboliini and Ulomini. Molecular analyses were based on DNA sequence data from four non\u2010overlapping gene regions: carbamoyl\u2010phosphate synthetase domain of\n                    <jats:italic>rudimentary<\/jats:italic>\n                    (CAD) (723\u2009bp),\n                    <jats:italic>wingless<\/jats:italic>\n                    (\n                    <jats:italic>wg<\/jats:italic>\n                    ) (438\u2009bp) and nuclear ribosomal 28S (1101\u2009bp) and mitochondrial ribosomal 12S (363\u2009bp). Additionally, 15 larval and imaginal characters were scored and subjected to an ancestral state reconstruction analysis. Results revealed that Amphidorini, Blaptini, Dendarini, Pedinini, Platynotini, Platyscelidini and Opatrini form a clade which can be defined by the following morphological features: adults\u2014antennae lacking compound\/stellate sensoria; procoxal cavities externally and internally closed, intersternal membrane of abdominal ventrites 3\u20135 visible; paired abdominal defensive glands present, elongate, not annulated; larvae\u2014prolegs enlarged (adapted for digging); ninth tergite lacking urogomphi. To accommodate this monophyletic grouping (281 genera and \u223c4000 species), the subfamily Blaptinae\n                    <jats:bold>sens. nov.<\/jats:bold>\n                    is resurrected. Prior to these results, all of the tribes within Blaptinae were classified within the polyphyletic subfamily Tenebrioninae. The non\u2010monophyletic nature of Terebrioninae has already been postulated by previous authors, yet no taxonomic decisions were made to fix its status. The reinstatement of Blaptinae, which groups \u223c50% of the former Tenebrioninae, helps to clarify phylogenetic relations among the whole family and is the first step towards a complete higher\u2010level revision of Tenebrionidae. With C. grimmi sp. n. from Egypt an eleventh species is here described and illustrated. Specimens representing the newly proposed species were identified as C. oblongiusculus (Fairmaire, 1875) in many of the surveyed entomological collections. This could potentially be explained by the superficial convergence of C. grimmi sp. n. with the description of Halomenus lineicollis Fairmaire, 1879, which is now considered a junior synonym of C. oblongiusculus. Morphological distinctiveness of all of the above mentioned taxa is hereby discussed. The lectotype for Halonomus lineicollis Fairmaire, 1879 is designated in order to fix the nomenclatural status of that taxon.
