It shows how islands have always had a great influence on ecology, evolution, and biogeography. For mainland systems, the diversity of insular biotas is often simply characterized by their species richness, which refers to the number of species of a particular taxon. The chapter then looks at the patterns and causal explanations for differences in species richness among islands. It also details the ecological and evolutionary assembly of insular biotas, noting that the depauperate and disharmonic evolutionary arena of remote islands establishes ecological naiveté, one of the most perilous characteristics of insular plants and animals.

[[2024,8,6
["Island We first address the subsidized island biogeography (SIB) hypothesis, which predicts that spatial subsidies may cause insular species richness to deviate from species–area predictions, especially on small islands. Next, we examine the small island effect (SIE), which suggests small islands may not fit the traditional log‐linear species–area curve.
Location Islands with arthropodivorous lizard communities throughout the Gulf of California.
Methods To evaluate the SIB hypothesis, we first identified subsidized and unsubsidized islands based on surrogate measures of allochthonous productivity (i.e. island size and bird presence). Subsequently, we created species–area curves from previously published lizard species richness and island area data. We used the residuals and slopes from these analyses to compare species richness on subsidized and unsubsidized islands. To test for an SIE, we used breakpoint regression to model the relationship between lizard species richness and island area. We compared results from this model to results from the log‐linear regression model.
Results Subsidized islands had a lower slope than unsubsidized islands, and the difference between these groups was significant when small islands were defined as < 1 km2. In addition to comparing slopes, we tested for differences in the magnitude of the residuals (from the species–area regression of all islands) for subsidized vs. unsubsidized islands. We found no significant patterns in the residual values for small vs. large islands, or between islands with and without seabirds. The SIE was found to be a slightly better predictor of lizard species richness than the traditional log‐linear model.
Main conclusions Predictions of the SIB hypothesis were partially supported by the data. The absence of a significant SIE may be a result of spatial subsidies as explained by the SIB hypothesis and data presented here. We conclude by suggesting potential scenarios to test for interactions between these two small island hypotheses. Future studies considering factors affecting species richness should examine the possible role of spatial subsidies, an SIE, or a synergistic effect of the two in data sets with small islands.
[[2003,9,26
["Small island biogeography in the Gulf of California: lizards, the subsidized island biogeography hypothesis, and the small island effect
D. These chapters highlight the historical and biogeographical factors that contributed to the patterns of species distribution and co-occurrence among islands. However, these patterns also reflect the action of ecological processes because the species present interact, directly or indirectly, within the food web that occurs on any given island. Island food webs may also be unique from other communities in the degree to which their structure and dynamics are also strongly influenced by the surrounding ocean. We believe that a deeper appreciation of the trophic connections between the sea and the land, and the resulting effects on the structure and dynamics of island food webs, is key to understanding the biogeography of species on islands. Many factors that operate through the food web can enhance or depress populations in a way that affects their local distribution and persistence, and, as a consequence, affects patterns of diversity on a biogeographical scale. Of these, we recognize three as being particularly important: the availability and quality of resources, competition, and consumption (i.e., by herbivores, predators, parasites). Bottom-up factors (nutrients, primary productivity, and food availability to consumers) set limits on island productivity and hence on the potential abundance of a particular group. Within a given community, secondary productivity and population density are subsequently constrained by top-down (i.e., consumption) and competitive effects. One of our goals in this chapter is to show how processes that influence productivity of gulf islands determine patterns of abundance of organisms on islands and affect interactions among species and trophic levels in these systems. Our second goal is to demonstrate the importance of spatial and temporal variability in productivity in determining the structure and dynamics of island food webs. Using our long-term studies of plants and consumers on islands in the northern gulf, we show that productivity varies greatly, both among years and islands, as a result of both local conditions and global climatic factors. Such variable productivity markedly affects food web dynamics and ultimately the abundance of species on the islands in the Sea of
