In particular, traditional populations were seen as unable to engage in abstract or hypothetical reasoning. Psychological work seemed to confirm these observations. However, it also revealed serious flaws in the logical reasoning of educated Westerners. More recent research shows that these limitations of reasoning were mostly methodological artifacts. Yet this research uncovered a consistent myside bias: reasoners mostly look for reasons that support their prior beliefs. This bias makes sense in argumentative contexts when one looks for reasons to convince others. Evidence also suggests that reasoners are appropriately convinced by strong enough arguments. Although most of this evidence comes from Western populations, the observational and limited experimental evidence available from other populations supports the same conclusion. This universal capacity for argumentation underlies a wealth of contextual and cultural variation in when and how people argue.<\/jats:p>","DOI":"10.1002\/9781118924396.wbiea1513","type":"other","created":{"date-parts":[[2018,9,5]],"date-time":"2018-09-05T13:44:27Z","timestamp":1536155067000},"page":"1-6","source":"Crossref","is-referenced-by-count":2,"title":["Reasoning and Argumentation"],"prefix":"10.1002","author":[{"given":"Hugo","family":"Mercier","sequence":"first","affiliation":[],"role":[{"role":"author","vocabulary":"crossref"}]}],"member":"311","published-online":{"date-parts":[[2018,9,5]]},"reference":[{"volume-title":"Mind of Primitive Man","year":"1938","author":"Boas Franz","key":"e_1_2_3_2_1"},{"key":"e_1_2_3_3_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1086\/314318"},{"key":"e_1_2_3_4_1","doi-asserted-by":"publisher","DOI":"10.1016\/j.evolhumbehav.2016.02.002"},{"issue":"5","key":"e_1_2_3_5_1","doi-asserted-by":"crossref","first-page":"459","DOI":"10.1163\/15685373-12342104","article-title":"A Dialogical Account of Deductive Reasoning as a Case Study for How Culture Shapes Cognition","volume":"13","author":"Novaes Dutilh","year":"2013","journal-title":"Journal of Cognition and Culture"},{"volume-title":"Witchcraft, Oracles and Magic among the Azande","year":"1937","author":"Evans\u2010Pritchard E.
