A possible explanation for this discrepancy is that many laboratory tests have not vivified solely the central thesis of the message but have vivified irrelevant portions of the message as well or instead. Two experiments examined the effect of vivifying the central (“figure”) or noncentral (“ground”) features of a message on persuasion. In both experiments, the formerly “elusive vividness effect” of superior persuasion was found, but only in vivid-figure communications. A mediation analysis revealed the salutary role of supportive cognitive elaborations, rather than memory for the communication, in mediating the vividness effect. The findings caution against attempts to persuade by increasing overall message vividness because off-thesis vividness has the unintended and undercutting consequence of distracting recipients from the point of the communication.
[[2011,3,8
["Figural Vividness and Persuasion: Capturing the “Elusive” Vividness Effect
Kelton v. Three experiments tested the hypothesis that generalization versus displacement effects depend on acceptance versus rejection of focal attitude change. Participants (total n = 471) read positive and negative ratings of different products that served as focal attitude objects. Subsequent attitude change toward focal products generalized to lateral products as a function of similarity (Experiments 1–3) and of induced preference for consistency (Experiment. 3). However, manipulations designed to induce rejection of focal change by telling participants not to trust the information presented were not successful: Instead of displacement, they produced attenuated generalization (Experiments 1–3). Stalking has given rise to considerable media interest and public concern throughout the 1990s. The England and Wales Protection from Harassment Act 1997 was introduced to legislate against the crime, but failed to define it. This article discusses the difficulties of defining a crime in which the behaviour of perpetrators is often ostensibly innocuous. Arguments. A review of 12 studies reveals that stalkers engage in very similar patterns of activities. Consequently, it may be possible to create guidelines for what does and does not constitute stalking. Next, a simple method of constructing stalker typologies is suggested, the classification being affected by the manner in which stalking is defined. Conclusions. It is suggested that the difficulties inherent in framing anti‐stalking legislation may have been overestimated and that existing academic research can provide at least a working definition of the crime, provided that a common system of classifying stalking cases is adopted.
[[2003,2,15
["Stalking: The commentaries on the target article range from the annoyed to the supportive, with a surprising number of the latter. In this response I attempt to correct some misreadings of the target article and discuss some of the ideas and evidence introduced by the commentators – much of which I found helpful, even though they do not alter my basic thesis. I also further develop the idea that the spatial character of images may come from the way they are connected to our immediate or immediately-recalled environment (by attention or by visual indexes) and towards which we may orient while we are imaging, thus leaving the alleged spatial properties of images outside the head and freeing image-representations from having to be displayed on any surface.
[[2003,4,4
["Stalking the elusive mental image screen
[[2003,3,19
Behavioral and Brain Sciences
[[2019,5,7
[[2002,4
[[2002,4
S0140525X02560040
https://doi.org/10.1017/s0140525x02560040
0140-525X","1469-1825
[[2002,4
