As cited in the Membership Directory and Handbook (2002), the interest areas include transducers and arrays; underwater acoustic systems; acoustical instrumentation and monitoring; applied sonics, promotion of useful effects, information gathering and transmission; audio engineering; acoustic holography and acoustic imaging; acoustic signal processing (equipment and techniques); and ultrasound and infrasound. Evident connections between engineering and standards are needs for calibration, consistent terminology, uniform presentation of data, reference levels, or design targets for product development. Thus for the acoustical engineer standards are both a tool for practices, for communication, and for comparison of his efforts with those of others. Development of many standards depends on knowledge of the way products are put together for the market place and acoustical engineers provide important input to the development of standards. acoustics attempts to utilize contemporary developments in many areas of science, technology, and analysis to produce acoustical systems and products which address existing needs or create new opportunities. Topics in engineering acoustics become \u2018\u2018hot\u2019\u2019 when there is a convergence which facilitates a \u2018\u2018quantum leap\u2019\u2019 in some particular application area. Fusion of new sensor technologies, microprocessors, signal processing, and electronic data communication has produced new options in condition-based monitoring of machinery and industrial processes. Advances in the speed and reduction of cost in A\u2013D and D\u2013A converters, coupled with high memory density, has permitted the development of acoustic time reversal mirrors which could have application to ultrasonic nondestructive evaluation of materials. Computing power, new inversion algorithms, and novel transducers have led to the commercialization of resonant ultrasound spectroscopy which can determine the complete set of elastic moduli for materials with sample sizes which can be less than 1 mg. Study 1 was conducted in a third-year AE course, AE309, Introduction to Architectural Acoustics. Weekly reading quizzes and three peer-review homework assignments were incorporated into the course with the hypothesis that these elements would help support students\u2019 learning. This hypothesis was evaluated through the collection of survey data, which revealed that about 60% of the students felt that the reading quizzes increased their preparedness for lectures and 35% perceived the peer-review assignments to increase their understanding of the assigned concepts. Study 2 was conducted in an upper-level AE course, AE458, Advanced Architectural Acoustics and Noise Control. The theoretical foundation of Study 2 consists of Vygotsky\u2019s social constructivist theory of learning and a student engagement framework. Inclusive teaching strategies, including required regular practice and collaborative learning activities, were incorporated into the course. The impact of these strategies on cognitive belonging and engagement was explored using a mixed-methods approach. Details of the experimental design will be presented to introduce educational research methods for those new to the field. During his 40 years as an engineer with Submarine Signal Company and its successor, the Submarine Signal Division of Raytheon Company, his technical contributions were significant and embraced a number of engineering disciplines. The challenging technical environment of the 1930s and 1940s and the small group of Government and industry engineers involved with the development and applications of underwater sound equipment produced a working atmosphere ideally suited to his analytical and creative talents. His contributions included developments in the JL series of listening equipment, the QB and QC series of echo ranging equipment, Fathometers'?? and echo sounding equipment, and participation in the 1937 Guantanamo Bay Expedition, a joint effort involving scientists from the Navy and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution. This expedition established for the first time the close relationship between underwater acoustics and oceanography. His many published works include the post-war report, \u201cSonar in the German Navy,\u201d prepared for the U. S. Foremost among these is the concept of the eigenmodes and accompanying eigenfrequencies of a linear system. These can be wonderfully demonstrated via analysis of the overtone series of brass instruments (a one-dimensional system) and circular drumhead vibrations (a two-dimensional system). As an added bonus, important practical engineering concepts can be explored with these systems, such as the effect of nonlinearities and of nonideal properties on system behavior. Other natural topics include impedance, regenerative feedback, modal coupling, and frequency-dependent boundary conditions. Two of the new ones, Audio Engineering and Electroacoustics, and Sonic and Ultrasonic Engineering, are precursors of the present Engineering Acoustics Technical Committee. In 1961, the name of the former committee was shortened to Electroacoustics, and I began to attend their meetings. In 1964, the scope of the committee was broadened, and its present name of Engineering Acoustics adopted. Early repeatable experiments in engineering acoustics have been attributed to Benjamin Franklin, and mostly anecdotal evidence exists before that. Modern developments involve interdisciplinary involvements with all acoustics, and specifically with the discovery of new materials, applications of their properties, and inventions of a wide variety of devices for producing, receiving, and using acoustics.
