The National Centre of Organic Agriculture, Yusipang, introduced 40 open-pollinated entries between 2020 and 2021. With an objective to evaluate and select the most desired tomato varieties for commercial cultivation in Bhutan, seven tomato entries were prescreened and selected using combined scoring of the total votes from the Participatory Varietal Selection and yield of entries in 2021. The Randomized Block Design with eight entry treatments and three replications with Ratan as standard check was employed to evaluate their yield and yield parameters; fruit quality; and tolerance to pests and diseases in 2022.  ANOVA followed by Tukey HSD test for mean separation was employed at p-value at P&lt;0.05. The result showed that AVTO1954 produced a significantly higher yield (29.8 tons\/acre) compared to AVTO1910 but not significantly different from AVTO1702 (28.5 tons\/acre) and AVTO1907 (28.4tons \/acre). Although Roma (check) produced the highest total number of fruits per plant (110), it produced the lowest number of marketable fruits per plant (7) compared to all other entries, while the plant height did not show any statistically significant differences between different treatment entries. Two entries with the lowest disease incidence were AVTO1702 and AVTO1954, while Roma was infested with blight and powdery mildew at 27% and 45% respectively. It shows how both biotechnology and traditional plant breeding can use Darwinian insights to identify promising routes for crop genetic improvement and avoid costly dead ends. It explains why plant traits that have been genetically optimized by individual selection\u2014such as photosynthesis and drought tolerance\u2014are bad candidates for genetic improvement. entitled \u201cAssessment of genetic variability for seed yield and it\u2019s contributing traits inurdbean genotypes\u201d was conducted during the summer of 2024 at the Agricultural Research Station,Ummedganj, Kota, (Rajasthan). The experimental material consisted of forty-two urdbean genotypesincluding three check varieties (Pratap Urd-1, Kota Urd-3, Kota Urd-4), which were evaluated using arandomized block design with three replications. The analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that thedifferences among the 42 urdbean genotypes were highly significant for all 13 quantitative traits studied.A high magnitude of genotypic coefficients of variation (GCV), phenotypic coefficients of variation(GCV), heritability and genetic advance as per cent of mean was recorded for traits such as the numberof clusters per plant, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant and biological yield perplant, suggesting that direct selection based on these characters would be effective in improving seedyield. The association study revealed that highly significant and positive correlation of biological yieldper plant, number of clusters per plant, number of pods per plant, harvest index, plant height and numberof seeds per pod exhibited a true relationship with seed yield per plant. Data"],"abstract":"<jats:title>Abstract<\/jats:title><jats:p>This paper describes a multi-site and multi-decadal dataset of artificially drained agricultural fields in seven Midwest states and North Carolina, USA. Thirty-nine research sites provided data on three conservation practices for cropland with subsurface tile drainage: saturated buffers, controlled drainage, and drainage water recycling. These practices utilize vegetation and\/or infrastructure to minimize off-site nutrient losses and retain water in the landscape. A total of 219 variables are reported, including 90 field measurement variables and 129 management operations and metadata. Key measurements include subsurface drain flow (206 site-years), nitrate-N load (154 site-years) and other water quality metrics, as well as agronomic, soil, climate, farm management and metadata records. Data are published at the USDA National Agricultural Library Ag Data Commons repository and are also available through an interactive website at Iowa State University. It employs over 2 million people. While crucial for food security and nutrition, livestock production faces environmental challenges. Sustainable practices are essential to mitigate these impacts and ensure the long-term viability of this vital sector. Fodders and forages are vital for sustainable livestock nutrition. They provide essential nutrients like protein (e.g., berseem: 6.9-26.7% crude protein), fiber for gut health, and energy. Diverse forages, such as grasses and legumes, enhance animal health and reduce reliance on expensive concentrates. Key practices include three-strata forage systems, agroforestry, and optimizing feed utilization. These approaches improve animal health, productivity, and overall farm sustainability. Fodders and forages promote soil health by adding organic matter, reducing erosion (through cover crops, no-till farming). This improves soil fertility and nutrient availability. Additionally, these practices can contribute to carbon sequestration through increased soil carbon storage. Overall, these benefits contribute to sustainable agriculture and mitigating climate change. Utilizing lower-cost feed sources like by-products and forages offers significant economic advantages. By reducing reliance on purchased concentrates, farmers can lower feed costs, improve profit margins, and enhance feed efficiency. This leads to cost savings, increased productivity, and improved sustainability by reducing reliance on imported feeds.
