These works are often less didactic than nineteenth-century predecessors; they envision more opportunities for female agency and frequently end happily. Not only is the dance floor a flexible space, the dance trope is a flexible metaphor for the concerns of Jewish communities in the face of cultural transitions. scenes provide an opportunity for writers to criticize societal expectations about courtship and partner choice, while simultaneously entertaining their readers. In this book, Sonia Gollance examines Jewish mixed-gender dancing in German and Yiddish literature, arguing that dance provides a powerful lens for understanding Jewish acculturation, secularization, and modernization. Gollance examines the specific literary qualities of dance scenes, such as the parallels between dance figures and plot structures, while also paying close attention to the broader social implications of Jewish engagement with dance during in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. While traditional Jewish dance was among men only (or women only), mixed-sex dancing was the very sign of modernity, and thus a charged and complex arena for understanding the limits of acculturation, the dangers of class mixing, and the role of erotic engagement in modernization. Gollance\u2019s book is organized around the spaces in which mixed dancing would take place: the tavern, the ballroom, the wedding, and the dance hall. Gollance also draws connections between the cultural history of social dance and contemporary popular culture, illustrating how mixed-sex dancing continues to function as a flexible metaphor for the concerns of Jewish communities in the face of cultural With her deep influence from Katherine Dunham, she gives a detailed synopsis of Dunham\u2019s life, works, experiences with racial discrimination, and her combination of dance and scholarship inspiring Osumare\u2019s own approach to combine these fields in her activism. In discussing the concept of Afrofuture, she reflects on the current shifting political dynamics that began with the the Black Lives Matter (BLM) Movement. Osumare explains how Afrofuturism equates to this current manifestation of culture where the past, present and future collide, allowing the production of a vision defying the past to become an integral part of the future. Her personal intercultural and inclusive approach to activism also led to move to Hawaii to study hula. She examines the soul power of black dancers and of her own career- through her dance improvisations and describes its meaning of dancing and performing with human depth. An important vector for this mass education campaign was the so-called <italic>aficionados<\/italic> (\u201camateurs\u201d) movement. <italic>Aficionados<\/italic> trained in and performed especially folkloric dance but also modern dance. Meanwhile, ballet remained the purview of individuals with (white) bodies ostensibly predisposed and specially formed from an early age. As a result, the ballet establishment focused on making Cubans into a knowledgeable public. However, these initiatives reinforced the divide between dance experts and learners. By the 1970s, all professional dancers tried with mixed success to cultivate an image of equality mandated by the 1971 First National Congress of Education and Culture. Although previously overlooked, teaching Cubans to dance and to watch dance figured importantly into educational and cultural initiatives that became hallmarks of the Cuban Revolution. Moreover, concert dance histories reveal the ambivalent outcomes of democratizing projects, which had the patronizing aims of enlightening and disciplining the masses.
