Chapter 5 records the author\u2019s bold move to Ghana, West Africa for nine months to study and research the basis of black dance in the Americas. She studies the curriculum of the School of Music, Dance, and Drama (SMDD) at the University of Ghana, Legon, under the ethnomusicologist Dr. Kwabena Nketia and the dance ethnologist Professor Albert Opoku. She examines the development of the internationally touring Ghana Dance Ensemble. She also explores her personal relationships with other African Americans and Ghanaians to further interrogate race and blackness from the point of view of living in West Africa. This chapter explores the unique positionality of being a black woman in Europe in the late 60s. This social position is further complicated with being a contemporary dancer trying to survive in Spain, France, and the Netherlands and finally Copenhagen, Denmark, and Stockholm, Sweden. The author forms a Danish modern dance company with another American dancer in Copenhagen and, together, they help create a dance \u201crevolution\u201d for the times. She ends up teaching jazz dance in a major ballet academy in Stockholm, where she is also able to continue her own training with former members of the Katherine Dunham and Martha Graham dance companies. The epilogue connects tropes of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries of Jews, dance, and modernization with late twentieth- and twenty-first-century representations. Popular works such as Fiddler on the Roof (1964), Dirty Dancing (1987), Rebecca Goldstein\u2019s Mazel (1995), Kerry Greenwood\u2019s Raisins and Almonds: A Phryne Fisher Mystery (1997), Helene Wecker\u2019s The Golem and the Jinni (2013), and Naomi Novik\u2019s Spinning Silver (2018) reveal the continued efficacy of the mixed-sex dancing trope in fictional representations of Yiddish-speaking Jews. These works are often less didactic than nineteenth-century predecessors; they envision more opportunities for female agency and frequently end happily. Not only is the dance floor a flexible space, the dance trope is a flexible metaphor for the concerns of Jewish communities in the face of cultural transitions. This chapter describes the author\u2019s return to the US after almost 3 years in Europe and continues to explore her blackness in the post-Civil Rights era of the early 70s (first in Boston and then in New York). Joining the Rod Rodgers Dance Company (RRDC) in NYC allows the author to become a part of developing concert dance among the major black dance companies who were second tier to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. The author explores the vitality of professional NY dance and the experiences that dancing with RRDC provided, such as the Dancemobile in the 5 boroughs, the cultural integration of the Lincoln Center, and the opening of the dance season on Broadway. Additionally, she explores NY\u2019s African dance companies and the growing need to make black dance relevant to black people in these shifting political Dances and balls appear throughout literature as a place for young people to meet, flirt, and form relationships: as any reader of Pride and Prejudice, War and Peace, or Romeo and Juliet can attest, dance scenes provide an opportunity for writers to criticize societal expectations about courtship and partner choice, while simultaneously entertaining their readers. In this book, Sonia Gollance examines Jewish mixed-gender dancing in German and Yiddish literature, arguing that dance provides a powerful lens for understanding Jewish acculturation, secularization, and modernization. Gollance examines the specific literary qualities of dance scenes, such as the parallels between dance figures and plot structures, while also paying close attention to the broader social implications of Jewish engagement with dance during in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. While traditional Jewish dance was among men only (or women only), mixed-sex dancing was the very sign of modernity, and thus a charged and complex arena for understanding the limits of acculturation, the dangers of class mixing, and the role of erotic engagement in modernization. Gollance\u2019s book is organized around the spaces in which mixed dancing would take place: the tavern, the ballroom, the wedding, and the dance hall. Gollance also draws connections between the cultural history of social dance and contemporary popular culture, illustrating how mixed-sex dancing continues to function as a flexible metaphor for the Osumare opens her memoir with her decision to move to Hawaii, albeit with some self-doubt, to begin her self-reinvention and to further explore the soul connection that exists in Black dancers. Her story focuses on dance in relation to activism illuminating Black culture. With her deep influence from Katherine Dunham, she gives a detailed synopsis of Dunham\u2019s life, works, experiences with racial discrimination, and her combination of dance and scholarship inspiring Osumare\u2019s own approach to combine these fields in her activism. In discussing the concept of Afrofuture, she reflects on the current shifting political dynamics that began with the the Black Lives Matter (BLM) Movement. Osumare explains how Afrofuturism equates to this current manifestation of culture where the past, present and future collide, allowing the production of a vision defying the past to become an integral part of the future. Her personal intercultural and inclusive approach to activism also led to move to Hawaii to study hula. She examines the soul power of black dancers and of her own career- through her dance improvisations and describes its meaning of dancing and performing with human depth.
