modes of information presentation, used in technical illustrations to show hidden detail, are identified and some historical precedents for them in the work of Leonardo Da Vinci are reviewed. Research into one particular aspect of graphic representation used in technical illustrations is reported. This concerns the deployment in hand-drawn images of different line thicknesses and their contribution to enhancing the interpretation of what is depicted. Whilst the use of varying line thicknesses has been formally incorporated into some documentation standards, it is not always observed in relevant domains. This project explores the way, as lecturers, we can approach the design and delivery of taught modules in ways that develop the skills of student illustrators, their knowledge and understanding through critical writing practices which combine drawing and illustration. The projects discussed here are across levels 4, 5 and 6 on the undergraduate BA (Hons) Illustration degree at Plymouth College of Art. This attribute has allowed educators to introduce subjects that were previously considered taboo in the classroom. Students\u2019 expressive and experimental nature also calls for new ways to blend pedagogy with their interests. This article focuses on my course, \u2018Sequential art for mental health\u2019, offered to post-graduate design students at a university. One student, Monika, who suffers from severe alopecia, shared her journey of transitioning from being a patient to an author of her condition by creating a graphic narrative in the form of a zine. This article highlights the essential factors that educators should consider to facilitate successful transitions in the classroom. As mental health disorders continue to affect more students, medical interventions are being implemented to address the issue. However, those suffering from these disorders still face many challenges in their daily lives. Mental health remains a top priority in universities, particularly for students. While an artist\u2019s depiction of mental illness may differ from that of a patient\u2019s personal experience, this article stresses the importance of using illustrations and sequential art to promote mental health. Co-creative learning and collaborative participation methods are recommended in this article as effective strategies for achieving this goal. Additionally, fundamental skills such as drawing are highlighted as valuable tools for self-improvement and awareness.               <jats:p>This article discusses place, memory and drawing. It suggests that \u2018place\u2019 can be a key theme for illustrators and artists \u2013 a container and metaphor for social, political and historical ideas. Using personal case studies, memory is considered as a storeroom of ideas with a close connection to the imagination.
