The play was Oscar Wilde\u2019s <jats:italic>The Importance of Being Earnest<\/jats:italic>, and in it the Reverend Dr Chasuble and Miss Prism are discussing marriage, not entirely hypothetically. Dr Chasuble \u2018(with a scholar\u2019s shudder)\u2019 observes, \u2018The precept as well as the practice of the Primitive Church was distinctly against matrimony\u2019, and Miss Prism replies \u2018(sententiously), That is obviously the reason why the Primitive Church has not lasted up to the present
