recycling in industrial processes is the increase of compounds concentration in the remaining effluent whom biological treatability can be reduced. In this paper a procedure aimed at evaluating the compatibility of a recycling system with an existing WasteWater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is described. This is an objective of the LIFE funded project BATTLE (BAT for water reuse in TextiLE SMEs). The procedure is applied to a textile company (Stamperia di Martinengo srl, Bergamo, Italy) and its on-site biological WWTP. The effects of the water recycling scheme on the existing WWTP have been evaluated by means of an integrated approach of respirometric, titrimetric and physico-chemical analysis and the implementation of an ASM1 model for the simulation of biological processes. In this case titration trials did not reveal any inhibitory effect of neither biodegradable nor biodegradable compounds on biological processes for water recycling ratio up to 60%.               <jats:p>There is now considerable evidence that, in plants, progeny phenotype can be profoundly influenced by the parental environment. Such parental effects are of particular interest to evolutionary biologists for two reasons. First, parental effects determine the level at which selection acts (Schmitt and Antonovics 1986; Wade, this volume) and thus may strongly affect patterns of selection response (Kirkpatrick and Lande 1989; Wade, this volume). Second, parental environmental effects may be viewed as a form of phenotypic plasticity, which may in themselves evolve in response to natural selection (Lacey 1991, 1996; Schmitt et al. 1992; Platenkamp and Shaw 1993; Schmitt 1995; Mousseau and Fox, this volume). In particular, if the cue eliciting the parental effect also predicts the offspring environment, then parental effects that enhance progeny fitness in that environment may be selectively advantageous.
