It argues that a regional approach opens a valuable space for examining what contexts mean in practice, but only if approached critically, with an awareness of the dangers of cultural essentialism as well as of the (also often dangerous) historical power of such imagery. Following newer approaches to regional geography, the chapter aims to view regions not as stable or homogeneous places but as spaces constituted by social relationships and thus marked by difference, conflict, and change interacting with common and stable features.

[[2017,5,5
["Emotions History in Eastern Europe
["University of Illinois Press
Emotions History in Eastern Europe
2018,4,11
http://illinois.universitypressscholarship.com/view/10.5406/illinois/9780252038051.001.0001/upso-9780252038051-chapter-005
2017,4,20
[[2017,4,20
2025,11,21
[[2020,1,21
[[2020,1,21
["Eastern Europe Joins Europe
["From Peoples into Nations
2025,11,21
[[2020,1,21
9780691189185","0691189188","9780691167121
[[2020,1,21
2025,7,2
[[2020,12,31
[[2020,2,1
["27. Sooner or later after 1945, the Communist governments pressed for the nationalization of church property, the severance of church ties with the West, the censorship of religious writings, the removal of uncooperative clergymen, and the setting up of legal and bureaucratic mechanisms to control and degrade religious institutions. The Communist bid to dominate education, along with the diffusion of anti-religious propaganda, in conquered areas, augured for enduring enmity between the devout and their new political masters. While these measures were not as gut-wrenchingly lethal as Soviet persecutions in the 1920s and 1930s, religious communities in most of the Eastern bloc nonetheless lived in an atmosphere of extraordinary repression and fear for most of the Cold War. Early on, this meant violent attacks against the clergy and efforts to dismantle religious institutions outright; later, it more often meant their co-option and control by state organs, party apparatchiks, and browbeaten or collaborationist clergy. A tour d'horizon of the general situation after the war followed by profiles of three Soviet-bloc countries—Romania, Czechoslovakia, and Albania—supports these chapter synthesizes the volume’s key themes and findings, exploring the entanglement of religion and nationalism through symbols. It discusses how religious symbols have been repurposed for national narra-tives and sacralized within religious contexts. It emphasizes the importance of distinguishing „sacredness“ as a socially constructed reverence from religious holiness, illustrating how figures and events have been elevated to untouchable status. It highlights the pivotal role of the Middle Ages and WWII in shaping collective memories and identities and questions how the relationship between nationalism and religion might evolve amid secularization and demographic shifts in the region. Finally, it suggests that broadening the geographic framework and incorporating perspectives from religious minorities and non-Christian groups within Eastern Europe could deepen our understanding of these evolving dynamics.
[[2026,2,3
["Heroes and Saints: The Sacralization of History in Contemporary Eastern Europe
["Sacralization of History in Times of Crises
[[2026,2,3
[[2025
9789048570188","9789048570188","9789048570171
[[2025
2024,9,8
[[2013,9,13
[[2021,3,5
["What is Eastern Europe? It defines key terms such as “securitization,” “sacralization,” “secularism,” and “post-secularism.” Ultimately, it concludes that the sacralization of history tends to occur predominantly in regions where there is a fundamental social consensus, be it positive or negative, regarding the past, particularly during times of crisis. Conversely, this phenomenon can also manifest in countries where intense political controversies surround the interpretation of history. Central to this process is the societal sense of insecurity and the active involvement of mnemonic actors in propagating religious imagery.
[[2026,2,3
["The Sacralization of History in Modern Eastern Europe: Introductory Remarks
["Sacralization of History in Times of Crises
[[2026,2,3
[[2025
9789048570188","9789048570188","9789048570171
[[2025
2024,9,11
2024-09-11T21:26:32Z
New York : Routledge, 2019- | Series: Routledge twentieth century history handbooks | Volume 1 title information from publisher’s website.
[[2020,8,2
[[2020,7,14
["Writing history in twentieth-century Eastern Europe
Antohi, Sorin , Balázs Trencsényi , and Péter Apor , eds.
