Part of the area is a tidal swamp that originated from marine sediment. Land reclamation by lowering the groundwater table promoted oxidation of acid sulphate soil that produced severe acidity. A tidal irrigation system that allows two\u2010way flow with a reservoir at the end of the channel was introduced at the beginning of development in order to maintain water movement and increase the volume of freshwater flow. After 40\u2009years of reclamation, water and soil quality in several schemes indicate a slow improvement of acidity. After the dry season, acid water with pH\u20093\u2009~\u20094 could be found in the canal, as well as potential acid sulphate soil still found in the shallow layer. Appropriate water management in the scheme should meet at least tree objectives, i.e. supplying enough water for leaching and diluting acid water, draining excess water during storms, and keeping the potential acid sulphate soil under reduced conditions in order to avoid excessive oxidation. Evaluation of the hydraulic performance of the existing main system indicates a need for upgrading of the channel to allow enough fresh water that could support the process of leaching and flushing. Materials and methods. The objects of the study were DWW from the TsS, K-3, LS-2 and MKL-7 collectors, water from the Tsimlyansk reservoir supplied to the Nizhne-Don main canal (NDMC). The subject of the study was the hydrochemical indicators of the DWW in 1972 and 2019\u20132021, and the comparative irrigation characteristics of the waters.  Results. Comparison of water irrigation characteristics from NDMC in 1972 and 2019 showed an increase in sulfate salinity by about 35 %. The irrigation coefficient according to H. Stebler (Ka) has decreased from 43.24 to 28.15 since 1972, while the irrigation water quality from NDMC remains good (Ka &gt; 18). In 1972, the average value of the irrigation coefficient (Ka) of DWW during the irrigation period in the K-3 collector was 2.98, in LS-2 \u2013 4.14, in TsS \u2013 5.54, in MKL-7 \u2013 22.96. In 2019\u20132021 \u2013 10.44; 14.85; 12.62; 11.61 respectively.  Conclusions. The irrigation quality of the Don irrigation water from the NDMC has now deteriorated compared to 1972 by 1.54 times. Over the fifty-year period of operation of the NDIS, the irrigation quality of the DWW in the collectors K-3, LS-2 and TsS increased by 2\u20133.5 times. Irrigation water quality in the MKL-7 collector decreased by 2 times. It has been proven that the use of fresh irrigation water for irrigation contributes to a sustainable increase in the environmental safety of DWW. The results of the deterministic integrated modelling system without uncertainty analysis showed that the Hwaong Reservoir water quality for total phosphorus (T\u2010P) (0.094\u00a0mg\u00a0l<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>) in 2022 would meet the reservoir water quality standard (0.1\u00a0mg\u00a0l<jats:sup>\u22121<\/jats:sup>). However, the water quality prediction for the Hwaong Reservoir in 2022 using the integrated modelling system with uncertainty analysis showed that only 28% would meet the T\u2010P water quality standard, indicating that to meet the water quality standard with a 90% level of confidence, further river basin management measures should be applied in addition to the construction of planned wastewater treatment plants and treatment wetlands. The developed integrated modelling system with uncertainty analysis was demonstrated to be advantageous because it can allow modellers to make useful decisions about whether a river basin management plan can meet specified water quality criteria based on the probability of occurrence. The dike closure in 1997 became a target of the mass media as a symbol of ecological destruction. The bad seaweed crop in 2000 triggered fishermen's protests which led to short\u2010term opening of the dike gates. The author became involved in a series of events as a responsible government official in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) in Japan. This paper illustrates how the Ministry coped with a difficult situation and brings out basic approaches and practical measures for better coordination as a result of these experiences, focusing on the social aspects. The developed model is validated through applications to an actual target region (Saemangeum reclamation area, zone 6). A newly developed metaheuristic optimization algorithm, termed a proportional genetic harmony search algorithm (PGHSA), is proposed in this study. To evaluate the optimization results of pipe diameters for the target region, the cost and hydraulic results of the initial and optimal designs are investigated by means of a comparison. Spatial equalization of nodal pressure and the economic velocity of each pipe are used as indicators for evaluating the hydraulic stability of the irrigation system. The results indicate that the proposed optimal design model can save construction cost considerably, by 1\u201311%, in comparison to the original plans.
