This Utrecht-born Jesuit is better known as standing at the beginning of the <italic>Acta sanctorum<\/italic>, a large-scale collaborative project which, over three centuries, published the lives of some 6,200 saints. Delrio\u2019s influence on Rosweyde, it is argued, has been purposefully forgotten. The chapter shows how Rosweyde\u2019s scholarship, with its textual literalism and clear polemical intent, evinces many of the same features of Delrio\u2019s work. It also shows how Rosweyde\u2019s self-styled successor Jean Bolland offered a different model of scholarship. This chapter argues that, in spite of contemporary protestations about its <italic>semper eadem<\/italic> nature, there was an intellectual geography to early modern Catholicism. It also explores the role played by health and social inequalities. By bringing these perspectives together the Chapter makes visible the ways in which lifecourse inequality and adversity e.g. childhood abuse, create and\/or amplify risks to mental health in later life. It also exposes the embedded and structural nature of causative mechanisms. Health inequalities have profound implications for mental health. People from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds suffer disproportionately from common mental disorders, such as depression, across the whole lifecourse. They are also exposed to higher levels of chronic psychosocial stress which, independently and additively, undermines mental wellbeing. These effects are cumulative over the longer term and in more unequal societies; also by exposure to discrimination and oppression. These arguments challenge the dominance of the \u2018inevitable decline\u2019 model of ageing exposing a more nuanced complex set of intersecting risks to mental health that are structurally located and socially produced. 2 engages with major debates in family and relationships studies to set out the book\u2019s core theoretical and conceptual framework. Drawing on Orientalist and decolonizing arguments, it explains how Muslim family life has been marginalized in both traditional and current theories of family. It identifies extended family formations as a privileged marker of difference for Muslim families which operates to position Muslims as problematic. The chapter considers how the conceptual orientation of family practices and personal life offers some valuable tools with which to explore Muslim family life. The chapter also explains why the conceptual and analytical lens of the family cannot be straightforwardly discarded when examining Muslim family
