Then, the recognition that maps are actually cultural texts made for specific functions transformed map history into an exciting, interdisciplinary field of study. Scholars across the humanities and social sciences now seek to understand how past peoples thought about and acted in their particular worlds. The result is a substantial literature, which in many respects resembles a multifaceted iceberg: each disciplinary perspective reveals only the tip. In taking a series of selective and topical cuts through the recent literature, this bibliography cannot take every new perspective into account. However, for a long time, armies were waging wars with few maps, or even no maps at all, relying mostly on mental maps or local guides. A stronger connection between cartography, mapping, and war appears for the first time in the early modern period when, under the pressure of protracted wars and new war techniques (artillery), the relationship between warfare and cartography became closer, not only encouraging the use of maps, but also serving as the biggest stimulus to the development of cartography. The development of warfare strategy, which, over time, grew into a scientific discipline, led to a better education of officers in both map use and mapmaking. A major turn in that regard would take place in the early eighteenth century, when the establishment of military academies, which included surveying and mapmaking in their curricula, enabled the development of military cartography as a separate field of cartography specialized in the production of maps for military purposes. An even closer relationship between mapping and warfare was established in the nineteenth century when specialized national mapping agencies appeared within the military forces. Technical advances in warfare cartography were further spurred by military requirements in the twentieth century. Under the influence of World Wars I and II, mapping for military purposes advanced immensely, not only in the technical sense (due to the application of aerial imagery), but also in regard to the specialization of mapping aimed at trench warfare, aviation combat, and marine warfare. Although WWI military cartography was marked by national productions of different scales, map projections, and measurement units, the global nature of WWII contributed to the unification of different geodetic and cartographic sign systems into a single international standard. The application of photogrammetry and satellite imagery during the Cold War enabled rapid mapping, ensuring complete world coverage at a medium scale. Following a brief historical contextualization of these relationships, this report explores their current state in the Geoweb era. Using the distinction between story maps and grid maps as an analytical framework, I review emerging issues around the extensive use of technologies and online mapping services (i.e. Google maps) to convey stories and to produce new ones. Drawing on literature in film studies, literary studies, visual arts, computer science and communication, I also emphasize the emergence of new forms of spatial expressions interested in providing different perspectives about places and about stories associated to places. is the basic language of geography and an indispensable tool for spatial analysis. But for a long time, maps have been regarded as an objective and neutral scientific achievement. Inspired by critical geography, critical cartography\/GIS came into being with the goal of clarifying the discourse embedded in cartographic practice. Power relationship challenges the untested assumption in map representation that is taken for granted. After more than 40 years of debate and running in, this research field has initially shown an outline, and critical cartography\/GIS has roughly formed two research directions: the deconstruction path mainly starts from the identity of cartography subject and the process of map knowledge production, and analyzes the inseparable relationship between cartography and national governance and its internal power mechanism respectively; the construction path mainly relies on cooperative mapping and anti-mapping to realize the reproduction of map data. Domestic critical cartography\/GIS research has just started, and it is necessary to continue to absorb the achievements of critical geography and carry out research in different historical periods. The deconstruction research of different types of maps also needs to strengthen the in-depth bridging between the construction path and the deconstruction path, and to be more open to the public. I do so by building on Kitchin and Dodge\u2019s argument (2007) that parts of the apparent disjuncture within cartography might be resolved through a greater focus on emergent approaches to mapping as a process, which is the core idea of post-representational cartography. By looking at cognitive cartography from a post-representational perspective I emphasize two major trends. On the one hand, the processual positioning of post-representational cartography simply shifts the historical line of divide, since it inherently disqualifies any cognitive studies that artificially dissociate the map from its context of use and production. On the other hand, by enabling the combination of critical positioning with empiricist practices, post-representational cartography offers opportunities to revisit in practical terms the tensions between these two approaches. Rather than attempt a broad, shallow survey, we chose to focus on some of the period\u2019s significant conceptual frameworks, and relate each model to one or more related research papers published since A. Jon Kimerling (1989) summarized cartographic research for the first volume of Geography in America. This has been a transition period in which the discipline has witnessed several significant changes, including: (1) the nearly complete automation of the cartographic process and a proliferation of maps produced by desktop mapping systems and GISs; (2) the inclusion of significant amounts of core cartographic research\u2014such as terrain modeling, geographic data structures, generalization, and interpolation\u2014within the growing discipline of GIS; and (3) the wide adoption of the term \u201cgeographic visualization\u201d to describe the dynamic, interactive component of cartography. These developments and the migration of more and more cartographic interests into the newly created discipline of GIS have raised concern about whether our discipline would survive. These doubts are offset by growing recognition that research and education on representational issues in GIS is critical, and that research in map design, symbolization, and generalization cannot be neglected. Cartography remains an independent discipline. Our two journals, Cartography and Geographic Information Science (recently renamed with Science replacing Systems) and Cartographic Perspectives, are thriving. American cartographic researchers also publish their work in Cartographica, GeoInfo Systems, GIS World, and the International Journal of Geographic Information Science. The Mapping Science Committee of the National Academy of Sciences and the recently formed Committee on Geography represent our interests at the national level, as do the Cartography and Geographic Information Society (a member organization of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping), the North American Cartographic Information Society, the University Consortium for Geographic Information Science, and the AAG\u2019s Cartography Specialty Group. The cartographic expert system experienced the intelligent expression of symbolism. After the spatial optimization decision of behaviorism intelligent expression, cartography faces the combination of deep learning under connectionism to improve the intelligent level of cartography. This paper discusses three problems about the proposition of \u201cdeep learning + cartography\u201d.
