All living things, including microorganisms, are placed into a system of classification. This system highlights characteristics that are common among certain groups, while giving order to the huge variety of microorganisms that exist on our planet. This science of classifying living things is known as taxonomy. The chapter then looks at the anatomy of bacterial cells, considering flagella, fimbriae, and pili. It also explains the principles of bacterial growth, which is a complex process and important in the diagnosis of bacterial disease. This growth allows the organism to reach a critical mass so that the laboratory scientist can examine the bacteria and use the information to determine the cause of an infection. As the cost per test has decreased, the more useful WGS has become as a routine diagnostic tool across diagnostic microbiology. These uses include epidemiology, detection of virulence markers, detection of drug resistance, and in vaccine development. In the early 2000s, DNA sequencing changed rapidly with the introduction of \u2018non-Sanger\u2019 technologies \u2014 so-called next generation sequencing (NGS). As rapid developments in sequencing technologies are occurring every year, they will rapidly change microbiology and enhance its ability to better diagnose and monitor causes of infectious disease throughout the
