This introductory chapter provides an overview of how Jewish collectors, Jewish ethnographers, and Jewish museologists used their work both to promote and to demonstrate Jewish integration into the broader Polish society, demonstrating while also fostering rootedness and belonging. What Jewish collectors and ethnographers saw as the best way to research and present Jewish life to various audiences had everything to do with pre-First World War imperial frameworks and European trends in ethnography and museology. Collectors and museologists also attempted to use their own cities as models for what Jewish museums and Polish Jews could and should be. In bringing together portraiture, artisan Judaica, crafts, and ethnographic objects, they often blurred the distinction between \u201cfine art\u201d and \u201cfolk art.\u201d The chapter then looks at the relationship between ethnography and nationalism, as well as the use of the language of colonialism by Polish This chapter examines the history of museums as it relates to American Indians in the United States, from the eighteenth century to the present. The chapter takes into account the often troubling use of the museum to depict indigenous societies as exotic relics of the past, while at the same time alienating artifacts of their material culture from them. In order to better understand the rise of museums and cultural centers created and run by Native peoples in recent decades, it is first necessary to understand both the histories and the practices of non-Indian run museums that demanded this necessary corrective from within indigenous communities. \n This chapter assesses two instances of the use of Polish Jews as knowledge collectors and as potential models of Polish Jewry. The Jewish Society for Knowing the Land organized Jewish youth to explore their local and regional surroundings, mining the area for historical and ethnographic knowledge. YIVO, the Jewish Research Institute, used\n \n This chapter details the revival of the stagnant Jewish Museum in Warsaw and the opening of the Jewish Museum in Lw\u00f3w. Although Jewish museums in Poland struggled, museum creators proved tenacious.
