This chapter looks at the response of several prominent Australian periodicals, of varying ideological persuasions, to events preceding and culminating in Federation. The publications surveyed include: <italic>The Bulletin, Australian Town and Country Journal, Sydney Mail, The Worker, The Queenslander,<\/italic>   and the <italic>Australasian.<\/italic> This chapter reads the commentary on Federation in the light of popularly held beliefs about Australia\u2019s white Britishness, its \u2018improvement\u2019 of the continent, and the natural proclivity for governance that settler Australians proclaimed for themselves, and over their purported inferiors. These ideas could not be sustained without generating tensions that in turn required resolution. What transpired was a struggle in print over what the new nation was to mean, how its imperial value could be put beyond doubt, and what its relationship was to be to the empire\u2019s past, and its chapter discusses how British colonial periodicals debated the Atlantic Charter \u2013 the statement issued by Winston Churchill and Theodore Roosevelt on 14 August 1941 setting out the principles upon which Britain and the United States would rebuild the post-War world. Clause Three, which committed the Allies to respect the right of all peoples to choose their form of government, provoked three different interpretations. One view saw Clause Three as applying to European nations under Nazi rule, not as an independence charter for the colonies (the <italic>Bulletin<\/italic> in Australia; the <italic>Tanganyika Standard<\/italic> in East Africa; the <italic>Ashanti Pioneer<\/italic> in West Africa; and the <italic>Trinidad Guardian<\/italic>). A second stance viewed Clause Three as extending to Nazi-occupied European nations and British colonies alike (<italic>Current Notes on International Affairs<\/italic> in Australia; the <italic>Comet<\/italic> in West Africa; <italic>Inkundla ya Bantu<\/italic> in South Africa; and the <italic>Hindustan Times<\/italic> in India). The question of whether mediated experiences with nature can encourage care for the natural world has long been debated, but children\u2019s nature periodicals have received little attention in this context. Children themselves, meanwhile, are often neglected in studies of environmental communication. The <italic>Female Spectator<\/italic>, which discusses the complex events known War of the Austrian Succession (1740\u20138) and many specific incidents that received extensive publicity, often seamlessly weaves descriptions of soldiers, military commanders, military equipment, battles, and political events into broader discussions of cultural, social, and political events. By contrast, the <italic>Parrot<\/italic> discusses global and domestic military events. The Welsh popular press was still very much in its infancy, but a radical\u00a0peripatetic\u00a0schooling system\u00a0and a wave of religious revival, inspired a new interest in childhood and a new concern for children. The Addysgydd (\u2018Educator\u2019) aimed to create a reading culture and community that would sustain the young members of the church. It was a\u00a0prescriptive\u00a0literature, an attempt to imprint\u00a0particular behaviours\u00a0and habits. But\u00a0it was also a creative literature, engaging the reader with visual,\u00a0biblical,\u00a0and contemporary manifestations of the child.
