Although the reasons for their challenges are complex, one issue that is seldom addressed is the disjuncture between the historical built environment and the functioning of the contemporary market. Borrowed from the field of urban morphology, the concept of morphological frame is applied to understand how the physical arrangement of the downtown’s streets, lots, and buildings influence its uses. Shopping practices have changed since the stores were built, creating issues for operating in downtown spaces. A case study of a downtown mall demonstrates how urban form has an impact on large-scale redevelopment projects. Despite the limitations that the built environment poses, it is perhaps the core’s greatest strength as it offers a distinct sense of place not found elsewhere in the city.
[[2024,7,25
["Framing xml:lang="en">Urbanisation is an international phenomenon and intrinsically linked with the development of a country. For successful and sustainable urban redevelopment planning and implementation, participation of the local community needs to be strategically planned, as its members have an existing usage pattern of the infrastructure and surrounding areas and can be categorised as an important group of stakeholders. Urban road projects traverse a larger area and affect diverse and multiple groups in the community. In India, the practice of community participation for urban redevelopment projects is still at a nascent stage. Research discussed in this paper adopts a case study approach to understand the dynamics of effective community participation for road redevelopment projects in an Indian context. The paper discusses global research in this area and adoption of community participation in case studies of two urban road redevelopment projects in India. The findings show that the structure of public consultation and the parameters to be considered are different for urban road projects planned for core urbanised areas and peri-urban areas. After due consideration of these parameters, community participation should be strategically planned and implemented by the promoters of these projects.
[[2024,7,25
["Community participation in urban road infrastructure redevelopment: Indian scenario
[[2017,9,1
Journal of Urban Regeneration and Renewal
[[2024,8,15
[[2017,9,1
[[2017
https://doi.org/10.69554/ndbg1859
1752-9646
[[2017,9,1
[[2024,9,4
[[2007,2,15
The built environment deteriorates with the passage of time and the stresses of use and neglect. Zoetermeer was designed and built as a new town close to the government centre at The Hague and celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2022. It is now home to more than 125,000 residents. For decades Zoetermeer’s growth took place in the surrounding green fields. Therefore, the existing capacity-building methodology was not fit for the purpose of the ‘brownfield’ urban redevelopment challenge. The city authorities were also reluctant to engage in pro-active real estate stakeholder leadership. Since 2017, however, RITTERWALD pan-European residential strategy consultancy has supported Zoetermeer’s urban redevelopment strategy, including leading the preparation of a 10,000+ homes Urban Development Agreement (Stadsbouwakkoord) which is now being delivered to provide mixed tenure neighbourhoods. This achievement involved educating the municipal administration in the practice of urban redevelopment, including hosting regular masterclasses with high-level public and private sector actors. This crisis led to the realisation that a previous spatial transformation that involved removing factories from the urban fabric caused the cities’ dependency on global supply chains. To mitigate this, a new democratisation of the economy, in collaboration with new urban policies, could bring qualitative changes to the structure of cities and their businesses. This paper examines the design framework, Building Block Vision (BBV), which is the solution proposed by the Flanders government for the city of Ghent. In devising this framework, Flanders, by following the principle of thinking small first, examined the local architectural typology for inner-city urban areas. These inner-city urban areas once hosted economic activities, something which has gradually diminished over time. By formulating a spatial strategy for revitalising these inner areas and reintegrating them into local economic activities, the opportunity arises to introduce new ways of living. This endeavour incorporates principles of interchangeability, adaptability and innovation. ‘Research by design’ is the approach used to identify the inherent potential of the inner areas of each building block.
