However, the accretion rates and outflow geometries that result from this mass-transfer mechanism cannot adequately explain the observations of the nearest and best studied symbiotic binary, Mira, or the formation of some post-AGB binaries, e.g. barium stars. We propose a new mass-transfer mode for Mira-type binaries, which we call \u2018wind Roche-lobe overflow\u2019 (WRLOF), and which we demonstrate with 3D hydrodynamic simulations. Importantly, we show that the circumstellar outflows which result from WRLOF tend to be highly aspherical and strongly focused towards the binary orbital plane. Furthermore, the subsequent mass-transfer rates are at least an order of magnitude greater than the analogous BHL values. This revisionary astro-theology includes a panentheistic theology and cosmology, plus a metaphysical realism essential to meeting the ethical challenge of realism (Reinhold Niebuhr 1932). Recognizing that Christian ethics is reality-based can be liberating. Lung cancer is a prevalent and serious disease, and surgical removal of tumors is considered the primary treatment option for cure. However, some patients with pre-existing lung issues can face severe complications after surgery. The current methods of assessing patients' suitability for surgery often misclassify patients, leading to either increased risks of complications after surgery or denying potentially beneficial treatment.\n\nTo address the limitations of current lung-function evaluation methods, we propose to develop advanced imaging and computational tools. The proposed tools will leverage recent advancements from the field of radiation oncology to provide a more accurate assessment of lung function before and after surgery, allowing clinicians to better predict post-surgical outcomes. Specifically, the research will focus on three innovative approaches: novel lung-function imaging, voxel-based analysis, and machine-learning prediction.\n\nThe central hypothesis is that the new image-based tools can significantly improve the accuracy of predicting post-surgical lung function, from 63% with current methods to over 85% with the proposed techniques. The research will be conducted through two specific aims. The first aim will evaluate the accuracy of novel lung-function imaging methods in predicting post-surgical lung function. The first aim will integrate the novel lung-function images into the standard-of-care surgical evaluation workflow and evaluate the accuracy of post-surgical predictions of pulmonary function, surgical complications, and patient-reported quality of life. The second aim will develop advanced image-processing and machine-learning techniques to analyze and predict patient-specific changes in lung function after surgery. The second aim will provide new understanding of how lung function redistributes locally after surgery and generate new tools to predict maps of post-surgical lung function.\n\nThe results of this research will provide clinicians with better tools to evaluate patients' lung function before surgery, enable more accurate predictions of post-surgical outcomes, and guide future clinical trials toward improving long-term quality of life after lung cancer surgery.
