So far, bioinspired materials include, e.g., liquid- and dirt-repelling surfaces, structural colours, biomimetic composites, strong fibers, tissue templating, and underwater adhesives. On the other hand, stimulus-responsive, shape memory, and reconfigurable materials have been presented with switchable functional properties. They are typically in global or local energy equilibrium and their properties do not evolve or learn to allow new responses.\n\nThe next challenge is to explore whether some of the characteristics considered typical for life could inspire new behaviours of artificial soft matter towards life-inspired materials.\n\nHerein I suggest three approaches: 1) Voltage controlled dynamic out-of-equilibrium dissipative mechanical properties and temperature-based switching between dynamic and static properties. 2) Light and voltage-driven self-regulation with feedback loops for adaptation, homeostasis, and oscillations. 3) Optical spiking for dynamic structural colours.\n\nThe impact of this project arises from demonstrators and paradigm changing concepts for materials memory, biological learning-inspired processes, and dynamic feedback control. The underlying embodied intelligence and adaptibility pave ways to new materials concepts. However, global warming potential (GWP) of R-404A is high, and thus, a replacement refrigerant is necessary in the long term. Natural refrigerants, such as R-290 or DME (dimethylether), could be a choice. In this study, an ice cream refrigerator cycle was optimized using R-290\/DME mixture (mass fraction 65\/35). The optimization was accomplished through a search for the proper refrigerant charge amount and the opening of the expansion valve. For the present ice cream refrigerator having 2.8[Formula: see text]L freezer volume, the optimum charge amount was 900[Formula: see text]g, and the optimum valve opening was [Formula: see text]120[Formula: see text]. At this configuration, the ice cream formation time was 3[Formula: see text] 6[Formula: see text] and COP was 2.0. The ice cream formation time was much shorter than when R-404A was used, and the COP was increased by more than 100%. The settlement of the mat into the clay during preload when setting up on the location is used to arrive at the ultimate bearing capacity of the soil. Analyses are then made of the bearing pressure of the mat on the soil when the mobile unit is subjected to storm loadings and these bearing pressures are compared to the ultimate soil beam pressures generated during settlements that accompanied preloading. This comparison provides guidelines for predictions of additional settlements that may occur under the storm loadings. The method putting bearing pressures under storm loadings is unique is that it considers elastic-plastic response of the soil resistance as contrasted to conventional elastic solutions or equivalent-area solutions.<\/jats:p>\n                  <jats:sec>\n                     <jats:title>INTRODUCTION<\/jats:title>\n                     <jats:p>The first mat-supported submersible mobile unit, as reported by Howe (1966), was the Barnsdall-Hayward Breton Rig 20, later known as Kerr-McGee Rig 40 that was completed in 1949. Many years before the advert of the submersible rig, there were units known as marine drilling rigs that operated in lakes, bayous and dredged canals. These marine rigs were used offshore beginning in the late 1940's, and they were often founded on shell pads to increase their operating water depth. The submersible mobile units and the marine drilling rigs share one common feature: the large area of the mat permits the units to operate with minimum settlement, even on some very soft clay bottoms.<\/jats:p>\n                     <jats:p>Hirst et al (1976) have reported that the average seafloor contact pressure of mat-supported mobil units is approximately 50 psf when there is no wave loading. They also reported no significant settlement of the rigs as long as clay bottoms had shear strengths of 100 psf or greater. For very soft deltaic clays with shear strengths of 40 to 50 psf, settlements do occur under contact pressures of 500 psf. A handful of clay soil with 40 to 50 psf shear strength can easily be squeezed between the fingers.<\/jats:p>\n                     <jats:p>To control settlement in very soft clay bottoms a planned preload is applied when setting up the unit on locations, Turner et al (1987).
